Steeton slumped to a second successive defeat, this time at home against Rawdon Old Boys first team, who capitalised on a slack spell to coast into a five goal lead, but despite a spirited fight back in the last 15 minutes the visitors held on to secure the win.
Steeton started brightly and pegged their visitors back early on, hitting the woodwork in the second minute when Mark Hardmanâ€™s corner from the right was clipped goal-wards by Nicky McNally and deflected onto the woodwork with just 2 minutes gone. But Rawdon showed their intentions a minute later when â€˜keeper Dave Naylor was forced into making a smart double save, as the ball was played through to Townsley and as the shot was spilled, he recovered to save the follow up to avert the danger. With 19 minutes played Rawdon forced a corner on the left and as the ball was delivered deep into the Steeton box, a free header was saved one handed by Naylor, as he clawed the ball away. Minutes later, another through ball sent a Rawdon player clear through, but again Naylor did well to parry away diving low to his right. But the end to end football continued , as a through ball found Adam Spencer breaking clear for the homesters deep in the Rawdon box, but his shot was well saved by â€˜keeper Kirk pushing wide for a corner. But just after the half hour mark the breakthrough came when again a ball was played through, evading the Steeton back four and finding the alert Rawdon forward. Although â€˜keeper Naylor managed to parry away at his near post, it stuck the upright and was remarkably cleared, only for the ball to be delivered into the box again from the right and this time Ben Whitfield headed home to make it 1-0. The game continued to be end to end, although the visitors had started to gain the upper hand. And 5 minutes later the ball was played through to Whitfield. He beat his defender rather easily before carrying the ball just inside the Steeton box, before despatching his low shot beyond the helpless Naylor to double the visitors score. With the clock running down before the half time break, Steeton almost pulled a goal back when a though ball was chased by McNally and with the ball running out of play the Rawdon â€˜keeper inexplicably upended McNally and the referee pointed to the spot. McNally picked himself up and stuck his penalty to Kirkâ€™s rightt, but the fortunate â€˜keeper read this and made a good save, diving to push away and keep his goal intact.
Steeon were still optimistic about getting back into the game, but things nose-dived within 5 minutes of the re-start, as the back four seemed a bit square and were suckered by a good through ball and Antony Townsley burst clear, rounded Naylor before coolly slotting home into the empty net to make it three. On 52 minutes things got much worse, as Will Milner made a great run and as everyone seemed to stand off him, he calmly slotted his left foot shot from just outside the box, low into the corner and beyond Naylorâ€™s despairing dive to make it 4-0. Steeton were at sixes and sevens at this stage, and minutes later another good through ball evaded the back line leaving Naylor exposed and he did well to make the initial save. But the ball was cleverly played back to Matthew Doran, who made no mistake, finding the corner to make it 5-0. Steeton looked dead and buried at this point, but to be fair, a tactical substitution changed fortunes somewhat, and once again the locals showed a lot of character in the minutes remaining. On 65 minutes Hardman played the ball across, after some good Steeton pressure and Spencer lunged in at the far post, his downward header bouncing over the line to pull the scores back to 5-1. Steeton pushed hard and introduced another fresh set of legs in an attempt to get back into the game. They were raiding at will down the right hand side through McNallyâ€™s pace, but they had to wait until the 85th minute for a further breakthrough, when Hardmanâ€™s cleaver lobbed pass freed McNally and he volleyed his shot, as the ball bounced up, past the helpless Kirk into the far corner to make it 5-2. Two minutes later, with time running out, Hardman curled his cross deep into the Rawdon box and substitute Dave Dixon bravely headed home, whilst under pressure from a defender, to pull the scores back to 5-3. But despite Steetonâ€™s great effort, it was too little too late as the final whistle sounded, with no further additions to the scoring, the visitors securing all 3 points to add to their tally in their push for promotion.
