Steeton returned back to winning ways with a hard fought 3- 0 victory over Ventus Yeadon. With Arley Barnes and Rob Horton out injured and Ben Lamb on County duty. Manager Roy Mason had to change the whole of his back three. Mark Wilson came in as sweeper and Sam Rooke and Martin Crangle stepped in as centre halves. Ventus went in the game full of confidence on the back of their draw the previous week with Albion Sports. The game started at a furious pace with the home side looking to get the ball out wide and cause Steeton problems in the first twenty minutes and they had a couple of long range efforts that we off target. Graham Holmes went close for Steeton as they started to get more into the game. The first meaningful action happened on the 25-minute mark when Andy Foster played in Colin Horsfield and the Steeton skipper drove into the box and calmly rounded the keeper to give the Summerhill Lane side the lead. Horsfield again went close on the half hour mark as Steeton began to get their passing game going. With Jack Ogalbe winning the ball in midfield, Daniel Gaudiosi and Chris Smith were linking up well on the right hand side and the lively Holmes was a constant threat to the home defence. Whilst at the other end Rooke and Crangle were on top when Ventus did foray forward. Steeton rode their luck a bit just before half time when Rooke appeared to pull down his man on the edge of the box but the referee waved play on and Steeton broke with Gaudiosi feeding Horsfield, Steetonâ€™s leading scorer needed no second chances as he buried the ball firmly into the back of the Ventus net to double Steetonâ€™s advantage.
The second half saw Steeton press forward more as gaps started appearing in the home defence as they threw men forward in a desperate attempt to get back into the game. Steeton felt that they should have had an early spot kick when Holmes appeared to be dragged down in the box, but referee Stoddart waved play on.
Holmes then effectively wrapped the game up on 70 minutes when he burst threw on goal and drew the keeper before calmly slotting home to give Steeton the three points. This was Holmesâ€™ last action of the match as he got a well-earned rest with Nicky Trowers replacing him. Whilst John Butcher replaced Joe Park on the left to inject a bit of pace down the flanks. Both Butcher and Trowers were soon in the action and Butchers mazy run left the home side in knots before the ball broke to Horsfield who fired weekly wide. Ricardo Falconi then just failed to get on the end of Trowersâ€™ ball as Steeton threatened to increase their lead. A Trowers free kick just whistled by the post as Ventus also started to loose their discipline in the last five minutes which saw two of their players dismissed.
Mark Wilson was man of the match for a superb display at sweeper. He marshalled the defence very well and all three of them protected keeper, Paul Linyard very well.
The win cements their second place in the league, but with leaders Albion Sports dropping points against Salts Steeton closed the gap by two points.
This week seeâ€™s them in County Cup action when the entertain Oldham outfit Springhead at Summerhill Lane with a 1.00pm kick off. The club is hoping for a big crowd down and will be producing a bumper programme for the game. So for anyone looking for a game to watch this weekend then get down to Summerhill Lane for what should be an entertaining game.
