Steeton retained the Supplementary Cup thanks to substitute Chris Fothergill’s right footed strike in the first period of extra-time, in this keenly contested final, which once again wasn’t for the purist or the faint hearted, as Craven League’s Oakworth put on a superb show against the County Amateur outfit, never giving up until the very end.
Steeton started brightly and should have been a goal up inside 2 minutes, when Mark Hardman picked up the ball deep in the Oakworth half and slid his clever curled pass between the defence for Nicky McNally to burst through with only the ‘keeper to beat, but he blazed his shot over. From then on in, the game became a fairly even affair, with Steeton only getting their passing going in fits and starts and the workman-like Oaks midfield doing their level best to stifle the play through good work by Daz Harwood and Liam Rowley, always looking to free their quick front men. And after 20 minutes played, the broke to Karl Wellard 25 yards out on the right, but his shot went just over Dave Naylor’s crossbar. Then a minute later Oaks threatened again, with a deep cross from Connor Flaherty out on the left, but Matty Boyle’s challenge was enough to avert the danger and the ball went out for a goal kick. And more danger came on 27 minutes, as Oaks grew in confidence and pushed forward, this time the long ball played forward found Flaherty’s incisive run, but he crashed his left foot shot against the Steeton bar, with the Summerhill Lane side looking in disarray. But Steeton picked their game up and with about 5 minutes of the half to go, Dave Scott was played in by another clever pass from Hardman, but he was thwarted by a superb save from Oaks ‘keeper “Rocky” Shutt, as he burst off his line and flung up a strong arm to beat away Scott’s effort for a corner. Hardman’s delivery from the resulting corner evaded everyone, only for Scott to head just over at the far post. Both sides going in at the break honours even.

Steeton started the second half pretty much as they had started the first, with McNally’s great ball out left from central midfield, finding Scott’s run, he carried into the box with a defender converging in on him, but he drilled his left foot shot into the side netting, with the angle narrowing. Then on the hour, Oaks threatened again, but this time ‘keeper Naylor did well to save with his legs to keep his goal intact. Steeton broke again though, and Shutt did well this time to block under a challenge and McGee followed up, but shot straight into the big man’s arms. Steeton looked to change things and made a tactical substitution, reverting to a flat back four and sacrificing Rick Hall for Chris Fothergill and this started to pay dividends , as the link-up play from the Summerhill Lane outfit improved significantly. And with just 19 minutes of the game remaining, Fothergill played a superb ball down the left, over the top to McNally. He beat his man and crossed to skipper Ben McCormack lurking in the box, his shot was charged down and broke to Scott, who shot left footed across to the right hand side of goal, but Shutt was equal to it, as he did well to parry the ball away for a corner. Then in the 75th minute, Oaks threatened again, but the ball played in from out on the left was met by McGee’s timely challenge, as he covered back to clear the danger for a corner. With just 2 minutes to go the ball was played out left to McGee, who cut in, rounded the ‘keeper, and resisting his challenge cut the ball back to Scott, whose shot was blocked by a last ditch challenge with the goal beckoning and extra time looming.

The first period of extra time saw both teams looking tired, particularly the Oaks boys, who to be fair had put everything in, and Steeton almost got away to a perfect start, as Scott’s through ball found Marc Sennett’s run, but a defender just got a tackle in as the Steeton defender looked to the trigger. However, the breakthrough finally came in the 98th minute. Mark Hardman collected the ball in the Oaks half, ran through then played an angled pass out to the right for McNally’s pacey run. He got to the bye-line and with the Oaks defenders flooding back, cut his low cross back, finding Fothergill’s well-timed run and he struck his first shot past Shutt from 12 yards out to make it 1-0. Steeton seemed to have the upper-hand now, as Oaks players were going down with cramp, as they chased the game, but further drama unfolded, which tipped the balance again, in the second period. Having said that, within minutes of the re-start another good through ball on the right found McNally’s run, but his low right foot shot was cleanly saved by Shutt, diving to save at the foot of his near post. But Oaks were not out of it yet, and an incident just inside the Oaks half ended in Fothergill going from hero to villain, as he was dismissed for retaliation, after a disgraceful challenge, which went unpunished. And 3 minutes later Steeton custodian Naylor had his palms warmed by another shot from distance, although he handled comfortably. Steeton flung another substitution into the fray, to give fresh legs and a bit of presence, as Dave Dixon replaced McGee. But Steeton still managed a bit of a foray forward as another excellent ball forward found McNally, who raced clear, only to be foiled again by another great save by Shutt on his near post. Shutt even ventured forward for a couple of set pieces late on, but for Oaks it was too little too late, as Steeton’s 10 men hung on to re-claim the trophy.
