Own goal sinks Chevrons. Match report by Jordan Weatherall

A Jordan Villette own goal proved costly as Steeton lost 2-0 to Bacup Borough at Cougar Park on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides had an even amount of possession in the opening quarter with Angus Maney and Toby Jeffrey pulling the strings in the Steeton attack and Alistair Morgan and Jordan Villette doing the dirty work at the back.

Bacup had two good early chances to score, captain Anthony Bellamy heading the ball into the gloves of Fletcher Paley and Anthony Hall's attempted lob went narrowly over the bar.

At the other end, a mix up in defence saw Ben Clarkson race through but his shot was stopped by the Bacup keeper.

Bacup came forward again and Hall found himself clean through on goal but two well-executed slide tackles stopped the danger.

At the other end, Villette came forward and went Messi-like around three players before teeing the ball to Jack Richmond, but after a heavy first touch, the ball rolled into the arms of the goalkeeper bringing a dangerous attack to an end.

It was, in fact, the visitors who took the lead through an own goal from Jordan Villette. The ball was played across the box and bounced off Villette, who was having a good game, past a stranded Paley and into the Steeton goal. This was very unlucky for the hosts who were playing the better football out of the two sides.

Steeton had a chance to equalise before half time as Clarkson played in Angus Maney who fired wide.

After the break, both sides had chances to score with Maney going close with a spectacular lob and Anthony Hall firing wide from close range for the visitors.

It was the visitors who killed off the game with the next goal. The ball was played into Anthony Hall and he fired past Paley to double Bacup's advantage.

Substitutes Graham Holmes and Aaron Davis both had chances to reduce the deficit for the hosts as Davis had a header cleared off the line whilst Holmes had a shot tipped over.

Overall it was a decent performance from Steeton who were unlucky not to take anything away from the game. Manager Roy Mason will take a lot of positives away before the trip up to Carlise on Tuesday night.
